Two weeks of easily-earned victories against Class A competition did not seem to dull the senses of the New Life Academy softball team, as the Eagles pulled off their biggest win of the season with a 2-0 victory at St. Anthony on Thursday afternoon.
The Huskies were the runners-up at the Class AA State Tournament last June entered the game with an 8-2 record, and were coming off a 5-0 win over St. Bernard's one day previous — handing the team widely considered to be New Life's main obstacle to returning to the State Class A Tournament its first loss of the season.
However, the Eagles claimed the triumph by scoring a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings, while starting pitcher Danielle Schmidt hung zero after zero on the Huskies.
Centerfielder Andrea McNutt would score New Life's first run in the fifth, crossing the plate on a double by shortstop Jenny Ramey. Third baseman Rebekah Schmidt would launch a suborbital solo home run into the murky St. Anthony skies to conclude the afternoon's scoring.
New Life improved to 8-1 on the year as they prepare to travel to Class AAA Hopkins (7-2) on May 5.
