Monday, March 2, 2009

Minnesota's best alpine skiers hit the slopes one last time at the State Alpine Ski Meet at Giant's Ridge in Biwabik on Feb. 12, with team and individual champions decided on in both boys and girls competitions. Lakeville South, Edina tie for girls title There were two team champions declared on the girls side as Edina and Lakeville South each tied for the title with 146 points apiece. Minnehaha Academy finished third with 139 points, five better than fourth-place Stillwater. Lakeville South freshman Paula Moltzan earned the girls individual championship with a two-run total time of one minute, 15.68 seconds — 11 tenths of a second better than the second-place effort of Stillwater junior Carly McDowell. As both Moltzan and McDowell ran identical times of 37.60 seconds on their second runs, Moltzan's first run of 38.08 (the second-best initial result) was the key. The best first-run time belonged to Blake sophomore Maisie Ide, who skied a 37.93 on her commencing trip down the hill. However, Ide dropped to third with a second run of 37.96 to give her a combined time of 1:15.89. Cougars junior Niki Larson (1:18.29) took fourth, with Edina sophomore Kiltie Finsand (1:19.28) in fifth. Saint Thomas Academy edges Hopkins for boys championship Saint Thomas Academy earned its fifth alpine title and first since 2004 by scoring 159 points, four better than second place Hopkins. Holy Angels claimed third with 148 points as Bloomington Jefferson came in fourth with 146. Blake senior Marc Massie, a second-place finisher at State last season, claimed the individual title this time around with a two-run total time of 1:09.42. Massie led from the start after posting the best time — 33.55 — of the primary round, then claiming the sole sub 36-second time with a 35.87 in the follow-up. Cadets sophomore Dylan Thomas earned a solid second-place result with runs of 33.69 and 36.64 for a total time of 1:10.33.
