It was her parent’s hope that Treasa Ring would find something she was passionate about growing up. At age eight they signed her up for swim lessons and after seeing her talent and the excitement in her eyes, they knew that swimming was it. Now as a senior at Roseville High School, Ring has four trips to state under her belt and looks to continue her string of success this year.
Swimming is one of many sports that athletes must train for year-round and Ring has been doing just that since the beginning. “I think the hardest thing about the sport is the amount of time you have to spend in the water,” said Ring. Outside of the high school season, Ring trains with the Twin Cities Swim Club and has qualified to represent them in the prestigious junior national meet every summer for the last three years.
Come fall, Ring is in the pool to represent the Raiders and was chosen as one of the three captains for this season. “The thing I enjoy most about swimming is that it’s both an individual and team sport,” said Ring. When asked about the highlight of her high school career, the leader quickly responds with a team accomplishment of winning the school’s first-ever section swim title her sophomore year.
Ring’s individual success at Roseville began with lettering in seventh grade and making it to state every year after that. Last season she finished second at state in the 50-yard freestyle, her favorite event, and the 100-yard butterfly. She also swims in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays for the Raiders.
“My goal this year is to make it back to state and get personal bests in both of my events,” said Ring. Beyond this year, her goal is to swim at a Division I college and she plans to study elementary education. Several schools around the country have shown interest in her but she’s hoping to end up at a school close to home.
It just so happens that Ring has spent quite a bit of time in the University of Minnesota pool – her club’s practice venue - and she’s not opposed to spending four more years there. “Right now (Minnesota) is my number one choice but that could change over the next couple of months,” said Ring.
Wherever she ends up, Ring’s family will be proud because of the hard work and dedication she’s shown through the years. Ring’s passion hasn’t faded and will fuel her forward to an exciting future.•
