The Blake School is home to the boys and girls state lacrosse champions after finishing only the second season of Minnesota State High School League sanctioned lacrosse in Minnesota.
Each team faced Eden Prairie in the title game with the boys breezing through to win and the girls pulling out an upset. The state semifinals were played at Hopkins High School while the championship round was hosted by Wayzata High School in late May.
The boys bring it back to Blake
Blake had won non-league sponsored state titles in 2005 and 2006 before Benilde-St. Margaret’s took home the first-ever MSHSL title last season.
In 2008, the Bears were back to their championship ways with a decisive 16-5 victory over Eden Prairie in the title game.
Blake topped White Bear Lake 15-7 in the semifinals before outlasting the Eagles, who have fallen in the past two state championship games.
Kip Dooley led the Bears with six goals and three assists in their win over Eden Prairie and earned All-Tournament honors as well as state records for most points in one game (9) and most goals in one game (6).
Eastview, the No. 2 seed, beat White Bear Lake 18-6 with 19 points coming from the trio of Andy Freeman, Rim Rondorf and Rex Sanders.
Rounding out the All-Tournament team were Blake players Blake Dressen, Peter Johnson and George Orway, as well as Eden Prairie’s Jack Hewitt and Eastview’s Andy Freeman.
Blake girls earn upset in overtime thriller
Eden Prairie came into the state tournament with a perfect record of 33-0 since the sport was first sanctioned by the MSHSL back in 2007 and won four consecutive non-league sponsored titles before that.
The Eagles had a reason to be confidant going into their title game match up against Blake as they had beat them twice in the last two years, 13-5 at last year’s state tournament and 11-5 in a regular season game this year.
Down four goals late in the second half, the Bears fought back with junior Hilary Hayssen scoring the tying goal with 43 seconds to play in the second half. Just three minutes and 20 seconds into the sudden-death overtime, Hayssen once again found the back of the net and won the title for the Bears.
In the consolation game, Totino-Grace topped Bloomington Kennedy 7-4 with senior midfielder Anna Eidem leading the scoring for the Eagles with four goals.
The All-Tournament team was dominated by Eden Prairie players – Makenna Borg, Emily Sherlock and Caz Norwich – with Michelle Tremblay (Blake), Eidem (Totino-Grace) and Remi Famodu (Bloomington Kennedy) also earning spots.
