Hornets sting state tennis field

St. Paul, MN

Sunday, June 7, 2009

Edina claimed its second-straight Class AA State tennis title with a 6-1 defeat of Rochester Mayo in the finals on June 3. Mounds View finished third. The Hornets lost just two matches in three rounds of the tourney bracket, besting Eagan 7-0 in the opener before taking down the Mustangs 6-1 in the semis. Wayzata finished fourth overall, falling to Mayo and Mounds View after opening with a 7-0 victory over Duluth East in the first round.

The Hornets' Steven Pjevach and Erik Nordahl won the doubles title in straight sets over Hopkins' Marcel Gyswyt and Ryan Erickson, with Eagan's Derek Taylor and Justin Abrams placing third.

Forest Lake's Dusty Boyer took the singles championship with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Eden Prairie's Justin Haag, while Edina's Hamish Weerasinghe — widely considered the state's top player, yet was upset by Haag in the semis — roundly defeated teammate Noah Swiler for third place.

June 3 wasn't a good day for Rochester-area schools as Breck took the Class A championship with a 6-1 victory over Rochester Lourdes. After outlasting fellow west-metro private school Blake, 4-3, in the opening round, the Mustangs stampeded the remainder of the field — pasting Benson 7-0, then dropping just one match in the finals versus Lourdes. Holy Family Catholic took third in the team tourney.

Blake's Tips Jackley and Ford Traff took the Class A doubles title over Breck's Grant Bemis and Andrew Engel, with Lourdes' Ben Kopecky topping Breck's Will Oberrender for the small-school singles crown.
