The very first issue of High School Sports-The Magazine was published in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2005. A group of people got together and decided that there was a market for a monthly magazine focused solely on high school sports. They tested it in the Tulsa market for a year before offering franchisees around the country.
The unique thing about the concept behind the magazine was that all of the content would be local because each franchisee would report on high schools in their own community. In November of 2007, High School Sports-The Magazine was first introduced in the St. Paul area. President Mike King and his friend Scott Persby, both St. Paul natives, decided that the Twin Cities would be a great place to publish a high school sports magazine. Their plan was to expand to Minneapolis and the surrounding area by the end of the school year.
We have spent eight months writing about St. Paul high school sports now including Mr. Football Michael Floyd, state hockey champions Hill-Murray and St. Thomas Academy, and the Class 3A girls basketball winners St. Paul Central. This issue marks the first time that we’re covering schools on the other side of the river and labeling ourselves a Twin Cities magazine.
Given our growth plans locally and nationally – there are now 18 markets across the country involved - we’ve decided to evolve our brand to a name that captures the passion and excitement of sports in its purest form. After much thought and research, VYPE High School Sports Magazine was chosen and used on the cover for the first time this month.
Our new website, VYPE.com, provides a daily look into the Twin Cities high school sports scene. Find game recaps, rankings, polls, teams or athletes of the week along with content from our magazine on VYPE.com. Our site also includes an online community for the high school sports fan. Whether you’re an athlete, coach or fan, you can connect with people from all over the country. Log on now and create your own profile.
Special thanks to the community of St. Paul for making our introduction to Minnesota a success. We depend on schools, athletic directors, coaches, parents and athletes to be able to cover the stories going on. And because our magazine is free, we wouldn’t exist without our generous advertisers. Please make a point to visit and thank them.
We’ve come a long way since last November and couldn’t be more excited about the changes going on now. We look forward to familiarizing ourselves with Minneapolis and are pleased to be able to provide a more complete look at high school sports in the Twin Cities.
