Through the efforts of the MSHSL rules interpretation meetings, we now have a more consistent understanding as to what contact is allowed and what is illegal. Officials have been enforcing those guidelines pretty well and players are being coached as to what is tolerable. While most of the contact is monitored around the ball, the contact that occurs away from the ball needs to be observed, as well.

I have not seen a major difference in the way the boys’ varsity basketball games are being called. Many of the officials communicate that they still make many of their foul calls based on advantage, and with the three man crew, they are able to communicate more often with players. I appreciate the leadership by coaches, officials, and its league to try to improve the great game of basketball for the student-athlete. I would love to see the high school game implement the same rule-change that the NCAA made with the positions of the players during free throw attempts.

There has definitely been more fouls called this season. Last season we averaged 13.8 fouls a game and this season we are at 17.4 fouls a game. I can't say yet if that is good or bad. As the season moves on and more games are played, we will see if there a consistency to the calls and whether or not it cleans up what it was set up to do. As a coach, the biggest impact is having to go deeper in the bench when you have players in foul trouble.
