How many members are on a track team, how many coaches are on your staff and how do you coordinate responsibilities between the staff and members of your team?

Mounds View
There are 130 boys, grades 9-12 out for Track & Field at Mounds View, the largest group we've ever had. We have eight coaches - none of whom is paid a full salary. We divide responsibility by area of expertise (sprints, hurdles, jumps, pole vault, throws, middle distance, distance) and have a strength coach. We share athletes as needed for the success of the team.

MPA has 40 kids total out for the boys and girls program. I oversee the boys while Bev Docherty is in charge of the girls. We have a throws coach, a jumps coach, Bev coaches the distance and the hurdlers while I work with sprinters and the high jumpers. Bev and I share the jobs of entries, results and workouts for our all of our kids.

We have about 130 combined athletes and 6.5 coaches. Six coaches are funded through the athletic department and the .5 is done with fundraising. We have a head boys coach that takes the boys sprinters, a head girls coach that takes b/g distance. Our assists cover the following: b/g jumps, b/g throws, girls sprinters, b/g hurdlers and 400. Our half-time coach takes the pole vault.

There are 92 girls on our team and we have three coaches (including me). The boys' team has comparable numbers and coaches and we work together to meet the needs of most of our kids. For example, the jumps coach (a boys coach) works with the boys and girls. It can be a challenge as the boys and girls are not always at the same meet. We have outstanding assistant coaches who work hard to communicate with the kids and me effectively.
