MOM - I DIDN’T MAKE IT!!
St. Paul, MN
Terrible words to hear but even worse when you have to say them, “Mom, I was cut from the team.” Devastation sets in! What happens now? The process starts out as a horrifying thought. “How did this happen? The coach must not like me. I was way better than that other guy, but his Dad was always talking to the coach.”
It can be a life altering experience and... More

TIME OUT!!!!
St. Paul, MN
In a recent stop by Strauss Skates and Bicycles located in Maplewood, I ran into my good friend Bill Rhody. After talking with him about our magazine, he inquired about finding a place in the February issue where he could thank everyone that has supported him through his illness over the last couple of years. Bill is very integrated with the hockey community in the St. Paul area as he... More

Ready...Set…Wrestle!
St. Paul, MN
If you've never been one, or known one, you really have to wonder about wrestlers. While we can argue the merits of all sports and debate which ones may demand the most dedication, ability or expertise, I don't think there are many who would disagree that wrestlers are a breed apart. There really are no gray areas when it comes to the sport of wrestling, either you get it or... More

Get Out of Your Chair
St. Paul, MN
By the time you graduate from high school, you’ll have sat on your best athletic asset for 9600 HOURS! Let’s do the math: 5 hours a day times 5 days a week equals 25. 25 hours a week times 4 weeks a month equals 100 hours per month. 100 hours per month times 8 months per year equals 800 hours per year. 800 hours a year times 12 years spent... THE NEW HIGH SCHOOL TRANSFER RULE;
St. Paul, MN
This year the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) amended its Bylaws dramatically and changed the eligibility rules for student-athletes who transfer schools. The rule took effect with the 2007 fall sports season.
Previously, a student was allowed “one free transfer.” The athlete could transfer schools without a permanent change in residence or any loss of eligibility. A second transfer, however, resulted in the student being ineligible to participate... More

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!
St. Paul, MN
Remember when you were a little kid and you heard the first forecast for snow? You'd get an immediate chill that had nothing to do with the temperature outside and asked the inevitable question, "How much are we going to get?" This was followed with the unspoken hope of hitting every school kids' 'Holy Grail,' the oh-so elusive and highly-coveted ‘snow day.’ As one ages, the gleeful anticipation of the... More

A BRIGHT, BRIGHT LIGHT!!
St. Paul, MN
Tyler Cropsey is a student manager for the Eastview High School football team and has certainly made a name for himself. The players on the team have embraced Tyler and have grown to love and support this classmate who has Down Syndrome. It is hard to know who has gained the most from the special relationship between Tyler and his teammates. Tyler has been working with the football program since... More

Which one to choose?
St. Paul, MN
The winter season in Minnesota brings about many changes. A change that pertains to this magazine is a new season of sports to cover. The sports that we will be covering for our winter issues will be hockey, basketball, wrestling, skiing, gymnastics, cheerleading and boys swimming.
Typically, you grow up playing a certain sport and continue to progress in skill or move on to something else. My experiences... More

A BIG THANK YOU!!!
St. Paul, MN
We held our ribbon cutting ceremony in St. Paul at Mancini’s Char House (which I highly recommend) on Tuesday night, Nov 6th. I have to admit that I wasn’t expecting many to show-up but was pleasantly surprised to see many friends, coaches, parents, and players in attendance. A special thank you goes out to The St. Paul Chamber of Commerce for conducting the ribbon cutting. It is great to know... More

OFFICIATING – HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY
St. Paul, MN
When you as a player have completed your hockey playing days, high school or college, and are not going any further and want to stay with the sport of hockey, the best way to do this is to get into officiating. Doug Woog did it best when he coached South St. Paul High School. He had his players officiate squirts and bantam hockey just to see what the game was... More

KEEPING IT ALL IN PERSPECTIVE
St. Paul, MN
Besides my paying job at KARE-TV, I am currently in my second year as a football coach at a west-metro high school. I spent my first year coaching running backs at the sophomore level, before being asked to fill the same position this season with the varsity. It was in that capacity that I was watching one of “my” players lock-up a victory over one of our archrivals in the... More
