Blazer Domination
St. Paul, MN
For the past three seasons, one word has come to define Class A girls swimming and diving in the state of Minnesota: Visitation.
The small Catholic school in Mendota Heights claimed its first-ever state title in the sport in 2005 and has held onto the top spot ever since.
“There’s been a lot of things that have gone into the success of this program,” Nate Linscheid, coach of the Blazers... More

Back on Top
St. Paul, MN
While Apple Valley has been accustomed to its share of winning when it comes to boys soccer, not even longtime coach Chuck Scanlon was bargaining on the kind of season 2008 has been for the Eagles.
“Nobody thought we’d be doing this well,” Scanlon, who has coached the Apple Valley boys since game one in 1978, said. “I didn’t anticipate us doing this well.”
Yet, after losing 17 seniors from... More

Sabers Vying for State
St. Paul, MN
For as long as most could remember, Shakopee has been a basketball school. It’s enjoyed tremendous fan support and institution-wide interest, while also rewarding the high school it’s lone state championship — earned in 2005 at the end of a six-year run of Class AAA-qualifying teams.
While no one is besmirching the Sabers’ roundball heritage, it’s been another hardcourt-contesting cadre that has kept the suburban school in the limelight lately.

It was a triumphant 2007 for the Totino-Grace girls soccer team. Making their third-straight state tournament appearance and seventh this decade, the Eagles won the third Class A championship in the history of the program.
After amassing an 18-4-1 record, Totino-Grace was awarded the No. 4 seed in the state bracket and played its way to the championship after shutting out Sartell-St. Stephen and top-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret’s before prevailing over... More

Bump, Set, State
St. Paul, MN
It’s been a successful stretch for the Blaine volleyball team as the Bengals have qualified for the State Class AAA Tournament for two of the three years that coach Celeste Gorman has been at the helm.
“Every year we try to set the bar high,” Gorman said.
In 2006, that meant a third-place finish in Blaine’s first trip to St. Paul since 1997. Last season, the Bengals made back-to-back... More

Women in Sports
St. Paul, MN
The day that I was named “Most Athletic Girl” in my high school is one of my most memorable moments. I’m sure the other two nominees were as relieved as I was thrilled. In 1976, a female athlete was not an admirable thing to most people, but an aberration. In fact, when I started high school in 1973 there were no girls sports teams at my high school. I was... More

The Mounds Park Academy boys tennis team won the first-ever state championship for the school, which opened in 1982, when it captured the Class A title in 2005.
Apparently enjoying its new label, the team went out and won another championship a year later and followed that up with a third-place finish at the 2007 state tournament.
With longtime Mounds Park coach Michelle Olson being replaced by... More

Still The One
St. Paul, MN
Hundreds of years ago, mankind believed that the earth was the center of the solar system.
Fast forward to 2008, where many believe that the heart of the state girls lacrosse universe lies in Eden Prairie.
While the first theory was eventually disproven, all current evidence points to the second hypothesis being true.
Many know Eden Prairie for its top-notch football program – back-to-back Class... More

Big Decisions, Bright Futures
St. Paul, MN
If Jacob Esch, Joe Loftus or Matt Puhl wanted to act like your typical young prima donna athlete, it might be understandable.
The three Twin Cities area baseball stars – Esch is a Cretin-Derham Hall Raider while Loftus plays for Holy Angels Academy and Puhl for North St. Paul – seem to have every right to act as they have the world in a collective choke hold.
