The Girls of the MCHS Varsity cheerleading team traveled to Nashville, Tennessee on December 27, 2008 to perform at the World Cheerleading Association (WCA) national competition.  Since it was their first year competing in the small division, the team was at a bit of a disadvantage, but they were determined to win.  By the end of the two-day competition they had earned two titles, making them Grand National Champions.

Coming inton the 2008-2009 season with fifteen girls, almost half of whom were new to the squad, the team definitely had a long way to go. The squad ended with a perfect season.  Winning the Tri-8 Conference Championship, WCA National and Grand Champions, and completing the season with a win at the Wake County Cheerleading Competition for the fifth time in a row. "Everytime I think we have had our most memorable memory, we have another one!" said cheerleading coach Sonya Ehinger.

The team prepared for nationals by taking advantage of basketball games to perform stunts, jumps and tumbling skills, as well as adding extra practices before and during the holiday break to work with their choreographer of seven years, Jamein Small.

"It makes me feel great [to be a part of such a successful cheer program] because I am contributing to fifiteen differnt peoples lives, and they will remember it for a long time," said Small.  "When they look back, they will remember how hard they worked and gain the confidence to achieve anything in life."

After years of creating a legacy, the team continues to improve from year to year.  Not only do the girls manage to come together to produce a flawless routine, but they gain sense of pride by knowing they were a part of the legacy. "When we won the national championship I was excited knowing that we put forth hard work and effor tto earn what we deserved," said sophomore Alexa Shang who was new to the squad this year.

The MCHS cheer team has long been a force to reckon with. One look in their display case outside their gymnasium shows the extent of their accomplishments. The girls have put in countless hours of hard work to uphold their reputation as a level five competitive team. "I am exceptionally proud, beyond words I can use," said Principal John Williams. "The very first time I saw the routine I was awestruck.  It was clockwork, energy,  awesome, breath-taking. It was of course, spirit."

Even though the team was small, the team still managed to beat out everyone in the Wake County Varsity Division, being the first small division team to win the Grand Champion Award. "Yes, we're not perfect, but we work hard, and continue to be confident everytime we hit the blue mat," says Senior Alexia Hinton.  "Our team is not just a team, we're a family, and as a senior I am truly going to miss our Saturday practices followed by our lunch retreats! said Brandi Williams." The cheerleading season is now over for the 2008-2009 Mustang Team, but even though its over, the legacy continues to proceed.
