The Compelling Cap 7

Good things are happening in the Cap 7 conference in Raleigh. Really good things. As of September 18th the Cap 7 was a combined 24-4. That outstanding record is anchored by three unbeaten teams through four weeks. Leesville Road, Millbrook and Enloe were all 4-0 after four games. The other four teams in the Cap 7 started their seasons 3-1.

There may be multiple North Carolina state title contenders in the Cap 7. Wake Forest-Rolesville was probably the only one of them getting any pre-season title hype. The Cougars were an early favorite with good reason; returning nine offensive starters from a 2007 team that finished 12-1. The 2007 JV team at Wake Forest-Rolesville finished 9-1. So the rising Junior class is obviously ready to play. But now the Cougars have company.

Millbrook has looked virtually unstoppable on offense, while their defense has had impressive outings in shut-outs of perennial power Garner and East Wake. The Wildcats are off to a better start than the Cougars and could be emerging as a threat to the Conference and state titles. Before the first conference game there were already whispers of an undefeated season for Millbrook. Senior quarterback Brian Kass could be the leader that coach Clarence Inscore needs to take the Wildcats all the way.

Kass has been the biggest Triangle standout in the early high school football season. He’s confident, intelligent and capable of making good play-changing decisions at the line of scrimmage. The latter is something that is rare among high school quarterbacks. That can be invaluable come playoff time because the coaches can’t always see what someone can see from their vantage point under center. Brian is the younger brother of ECU quarterback Rob Kass. The jury is still out on which Kass is the better QB, but if Brian finishes the 2008 campaign like he’s started it the sibling battle may be won by season’s end. Brian Kass may be shining brightest at Millbrook, but he’s certainly not the only star in the Cap 7.

Enloe has two stellar junior running backs in David Highsmith and Joshua Senegal. I’ve seen them both pound out yards between the tackles and show the necessary speed to break free for big gains. The Eagles have the look of a team that could tell you what run play they’ve called and still rush right through your defensive line for a first down. If Coach Ron Clark can keep these two healthy and continue to get big stops on defense Enloe could be in the hunt for a banner year themselves.

Zach Gentry of Leesville Road is another big-time Friday night performer making a name for himself in the Cap 7. The senior running back averaged better than 100 yards per game through four contests. Gentry has also come up with big plays such as interceptions on the other side of the ball for Coach David Green. Coming off their state semi-finals season in 2007, the Pride are looking for another deep run into the playoffs with Gentry carrying the load for a young team.

With three teams starting the season 4-0 and two of those three having a state-champ look to them it’s not advised to take your eyes off the Cap 7. As conference play begins these Cap 7 teams will start to feel the angst of SEC football or ACC basketball teams each year. A conference full of elite teams can be detrimental to playoff hopes for many as the beatings come from the mighty neighbors in your own league. But the cream always rises and whether any of these teams goes unbeaten or not you can be sure that a Cap 7 team will have a say in who holds the 2008 NCHSAA 4-A title.
