On Friday nights it is not hard to find Samantha Poulos. She’s on the football field cheering for the Broughton High School Capitals.
Last summer though, she represented the Triangle region, rooting for high schools all over the state at the NC Coaches Association’s 2008 East-West All-Star Football and Basketball games.
Samantha beat out a countless number of other cheerleaders to be named to the 2008 All-Region and All-State Cheerleading teams. The N.C. Cheerleading Coaches Association singled her out as the only All-State Cheerleader from the Triangle.
“I loved representing my school,” she said. “With so much talent in this area, I felt very honored and excited to represent the Triangle.”
The NCCCA is dedicated to recognizing and improving cheerleading throughout the state and provides its All-State Cheerleaders the honor of cheering for the East-West Games.
“I enjoyed meeting girls from all around the state. I loved hearing how different our schools, teams and lives were,” Samantha explained.
The girls became a unified squad instantly and encouraged each other through long practices and tough routines.
Samantha’s honors don’t stop there. She also cheers on a competitive all-star squad at Cheer Extreme Raleigh and says her biggest honor as an athlete came when her squad received a bid to the 2008 Cheerleading Worlds Competition.
Samantha explains this competition is the “super bowl” of cheerleading and is the only cheer competition in the world for which cheerleaders must receive a bid.
“To advance to the second day with amazing teams was an experience I will never forget,” she said.
Samantha stays grounded by acknowledging that “nothing would be possible without the hard work and dedication of every single member on the team. Each person plays a very important role in the success of our very long, but enjoyable season. We strive to be great people, with impeccable attitudes, academics and athleticism.”
Samantha has special advice for aspiring cheerleaders: “Always have a big smile on your face along with great work ethic.”
She added, “Cheerleading is a very intense sport and requires dedication, spirit, passion and most of all leadership. Being a cheerleader is not only about being passionate for your school’s athletics, it is also about setting a good example and being a well-rounded individual.”
Looking forward, Samantha hopes to continue cheering through college.
“It has been a dream of mine, ever since I started cheerleading, to be on the sidelines of a major university cheering on the football team…which is my favorite sport,” she said.
