Scrimmages Reveal Promising Teams with Promising Seasons
Now that I’ve seen a few teams in scrimmages over the last two weeks, I can give my Top 8 Teams based on what I saw. Before, there was no specific order, and my list was based on last year’s returners. No scrimmaging had been done.
1.
Southern Durham – This is no surprise. I’m not going to be called a swami for picking this one. The team speed is unmatched on either side of the ball. They are well-coached and have a swagger like no other team in the state. The offense looks like organized confusion, but the ball is always moving forward.
2.
Wake Forest-Rolesville – The defense is solid and the running game features two or three good backs. I didn’t see this “new passing scheme” that everyone has been talking about, but if the running game is clicking, neither will anyone else. They also return over 30 lettermen from 2007.
3.
Smithfield-Selma – They are going to pound the rock all season long. The only team that I believe can stop that running game is not on their schedule.
4.
Millbrook – Quarterback Brian Kass looks like he already graduated, played a year of college ball and then came back to throw the ball around at Millbrook. Kuwon Eldridge also looked to be in rare form during recent scrimmages. The big question mark is their defense though.
5.
Durham Jordan – I’ll admit, I didn’t see Jordan scrimmage this summer. I am just impressed with Running Back Jerrel Rhodes and all the other returning athletes.
6.
Southeast Raleigh – Like Jordan, Southeast Raleigh retains a number of players from the pretty good team they had a year ago. Their matchup against Smithfield-Selma will be for the conference championship.
7.
Apex – As long as Running Back Kevin Fogg is healthy they should win games. Someone has to be the TRI-8 champion, and Apex has the best shot at it.
8.
Hillside –They moved onto my list because of the pre-season play of QB Corey Gattis. He made some very good reads in the scrimmages I watched and a quarterback that smart is invaluable in crunch time.
Notes: Hillside and Apex bumped Chapel Hill and Garner off my original top 8 list.
Check back with VYPE every week for my new top 8 football rankings.
