Years ago, I was a reporter for a weekly newspaper in Eastern North Carolina, covering everything from 4-H to Friday night lights.
On one particular Friday night, while patrolling the sidelines of a football game, looking for that great shot, the big play came out of the blue – a pass and a leaping catch. My view through the lens went dark when virtually every player on the field got in on the big tackle. By the time I realized I was going to be part of the pile, it was too late. They caught my ankles.
I went down.
Hard.
I got up, dusted myself off, and went home, vowing never to set foot on a sideline again.
Until now.
When Rich Williams called to invite me to join Team VYPE, I could not resist getting back in the game.
Student athletes are among the best and brightest. They are inspirational in victory and in defeat. In the inaugural issue of the Triangle edition of VYPE, we begin a legacy of inspiring, informing, and entertaining through words and pictures. Along the way, we’ll focus on good news about high school athletics, and all of the people who make sports happen.
This time around for me, things will be different. I’ve learned my lesson about keeping myself out of the action and on my feet.
See you on the sidelines!
