Raleigh Durham, NC

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

Cardinal Gibbons won the top Wachovia Cup for the second year in a row among 2-A schools.
The cup comes after the school earned playoff points in five different spring sports, including winning the state championship in men's dual team tennis.
Gibbons recorded a total of 657.5 points, well ahead of runner-up Salisbury at 500.
The Wachovia Cup award, sponsored by Wachovia, Wells Fargo Company and the NC High School Athletic Association, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performances within each of the state's four competitive classifications. The award is now in its 30th year.
In the 4-A classification, Charlotte Myers Park held on to capture its second consecutive Cup with 480 points. The highest scoring Triangle school in the 4-A division was Green Hope, coming in second with 457.5 points.
Myers Park's second-place finish in women's outdoor track and third-place spot in the men's golf championships help make the difference as Myers Park finished with 480 points.
Green Hope was the 4-A men's golf champ, third in men's outdoor track and finished in the top eight in women's soccer.
Wachovia Cup points are determined by a system based on performance in state-championship events. All schools finishing in the top eight positions (plus ties) earn points.
Wachovia Cup standings are announced three times each school year, after the fall sports, after the winter sports and concluding after the spring sports season ends in June.
