After winning one game and 5 minutes into their second game, Green Hope and 35 other girls’ lacrosse teams attending the Pumpkin Shootout Tournament in Morrisville on Sun., Nov. 1 were sent home.
“It was a wash,” said Prudence Lyon, girls’ lacrosse coach for Cardinal Gibbons High School.
Five hundred fifty sopping wet lacrosse players were forced to end play early when referee’s cancelled the tournament due to too much standing water on the fields. Lyon says Cardinal Gibbons was only able to play for a few minutes.
Colleen Stanley, events coordinator on the ASA Lacrosse Board, says the tournament will be rescheduled for Jan. 9, 2010. Stanley says last year the tournament took place at Finley Field at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a beautiful day with perfect weather. Hopefully Jan. 9 will be a sunny day, and the lacrosse teams will be able to focus on dodging each other instead of puddles.
