It was opening game night last night for the 6th annual TakeCare 2009 SummerJam Youth Basketball Tournament at Tamuning gym. Four games were scheduled. This year's SummerJam will host 60 teams and more than 300 games through the end of August.
The first game of the season featured the Inarajan Hawks, who arrived early and let the fans know it felt good to be back at the Tamuning gym after a long break. The Hawks began the season on a positive note, taking a win over the Tamuning Typhoons White 34-29 in the Typhoon Division B's 14-and-under Developmental Division.
It was a team effort in the first half for the Hawks as Bruce Merril, Jason Miller, Brandon Fujikawa and Keanu and David Diego put points on the board to give them a 13-11 lead at the half.
Igniting a scoring spree in the second half for the Typhoons White were Carlo Andre Medina and Joshua Ballon, with inside shots and free throws. As Medina and Ballon continued with hot hands, the Hawks' Merril and center Felipe Zamora made defensive stops and scoring drives at the other end to keep the lead as time ran out.
Top scorers for the Hawks were Merril with 12 points followed by Zamora and Diego with six points apiece. Ballon with the Typhoons scored a game high 13 points and teammate Medina added 10.
The 6 p.m. game had the Tamuning Typhoons LV team taking a victory against the Asan Maina Rai 25-15 in the same division. Kali Benavente of the Typhoons had a game-high 12 points, followed by Destiny Castro with nine points. Asan's Damian Pocaigue scored five points.
