Stacy P. Arrives in Tulsa Looking for another LPGA victory

Thursday, May 1, 2008

HSSTM: During your time at Enid High School you won three state titles, what was that time like for you?

Stacy P: I really enjoyed competing in high school. I didn't get to compete in a lot of national events so my focus was to improve my game and be good enough to play golf in college.

HSSTM: You left Enid for the University of Tulsa. What was the biggest adjustment you made going from high school golfer and state champion to collegiate golfer?

Stacy P: Life away from home is the biggest adjustment. You have classes, schedules and responsibilities you have to meet academically. Playing in a tournament and then having to write a paper right after you're done can be tough, but I loved my time at the University of Tulsa.

HSSTM: Was it comforting to be so close to home or was there added pressure?

Stacy P: It was comforting to be near home and my parents. I really didn't feel any added pressure staying in state to play.

HSSTM: In 2006 you tied for third place at the U.S. Women's Open. It was your best finish in a major. What was that like?

Stacy P: It was a test of endurance on Sunday. We played 36 holes and the weather wasn't really cooperating, but I played through it and finished tied for third. When you're playing well in a major you're really focused on what's ahead not what just happened. That day was special because my dad was on the bag. He's the one that got me and my sister playing golf.

HSSTM: The Fields Open in Hawaii last year was another special round of golf. You went wire-to-wire and shot all rounds in the 60's. When you're playing like that are you aware of what's going on or are you too focused on the job at hand?

Stacy P: When things go your way it just feels easier. Playing against the best golfers in the world and you're right there you just keep playing and make shots. You don't look back on the past you focus on playing good golf. Things were just going my way.

HSSTM: The Franklin American Mortgage Championship was your first tour win in 2005, is the first win the hardest to get?

Stacy P: You don't expect that first win to happen so when it does you're a little surprised by it. It's so unexpected. The second I think is the toughest. You're anticipating winning that second tournament and that adds pressure which makes it more difficult.

HSSTM: Do the pairings matter at these tournaments?

Stacy P: There are people you are more comfortable with, but you're out there with the best in the world. But yes, you have certain people you play better with.

HSSTM: What do you expect from the SemGroup Championship at Cedar Ridge this year?

Stacy P: It's a four day event this year so that will be an adjustment. Four rounds are definitely more difficult. It may play different after the ice storm, but I'm looking forward to being back in Tulsa and to a very busy week.
