HSSTM: Leading up to the state championship game the coaches seemed very relaxed and the carried over to the players. What was that week of practice like?
Trimble: It was really interesting. We had played really well, defensively we came on really strong against Midwest City and Westmoore. Our kids were really looking forward to playing Union. It was one of those rare seasons where we just had a quite confidence and the hardest part to manage was that they were itching to play about Tuesday of that week. It's a tribute to those kids peaking out at the right time especially defensively.
HSSTM: This year was really the year of the program kid. No real big transfers just a group of kids that played hard.
Trimble: Definitely, we had five or six of those seniors that waited in line for their chance to play. Zac Bertelli is a lifer and it was his first year to start, J.C. Carr our right tackle was in the same situation. Daniel Harp was our defensive end who leads the team in sacks finally got his chance to start. Jacob Broom started the year at receiver and ended up at strong safety. Nick Peer was a first year starter. When you look at the defense all of those kids like Harp, Chris Ray and Jason Bixler played in the shadows of Jake Laptad and Tanner Shuck last year. E.J. Colbert and Bertelli played behind Chance Robins and J.C. Forester last year. Nick Peer played behind Devin Reed. Just a bunch of good ole Jenks kids that have been around a long time.
HSSTM: How long can this Jenks vs. Union rivalry last?
Trimble: I don't know. Looking at the break down of our opponents Union got most of their kids back next year, they're all juniors it looks like. They're going to have tremendous talent coming back on offense. We'll have a lot of new faces next year, but we have new faces every year. It's still important to both school districts and it's important to both communities. I don't see it changing a whole lot.
HSSTM: When the final seconds of the championship game tick of the clock what goes through your mind? Is it elation, relief that it's over?
Trimble: It's been a lot of things over the years, but now that I've been around a while I've noticed the last couple times I've been really excited for the kids. We were going over the film and I remember thinking man, Chris Adkins a three year starter, that jokers going to finish off this game and win it for us. Mark Ginther a three year starter doing the same thing. Big Tony Gillespie and some of the ups and downs he's had with his career out there playing for the team. Those five seniors that waited to start. Just being happy those kids went out and finished their careers.
HSSTM: Any desire to ever step away from high school football like Bill Blankenship did and move into the college ranks?
Trimble: I don't know if it's a desire, it's always in the back of my mind. I think it would be fun, you know I love coaching football. It's a thought, but there are so many variables right now with my kids going to school here. It's a great school for my kids and there not going to fire me for at least one more year so I have pretty good job security as that goes.
HSSTM: What about the team next year?
Trimble: Gabe Lynn would be one to look for. Sky's the limit for Gabe, he's going to be a good one. I love Jake Alexander, he's a great football player. Our right offensive guard Brian Mincher. E.J. Colbert and Jaeger Cox are back. Tramaine Thompson who had a tremendous year at receiver is back. Our young tight end Tyler Ott who came on strong at the end of the year. Chris Ray who plays tight end and defensive end. Grant Goodwin at fullback, so we have a lot of upside.
HSSTM: I've heard you say before that one of the more rewarding and challenging coaching jobs you've ever done is girls softball?
Trimble: It's tough, but it's a labor of love. I enjoy the purity of that. Those kids are just out there to have fun. Their sincere and they want to learn. It's kind of like therapy for me. When they hit the ball and run the wrong way it can get to you, but I'm looking forward to it. We're already making plans for this spring. We're the Maroon Crush, they're too old to be the Wacky Pack so we're the Maroon Crush.
