Looking forward to 2008, most teams have 2 big events on their agenda: First, there is Dance for a Cure, Saturday JAN 19, 2008 at Broken Arrow High School. Dance for a Cure is a benefit event with team performances and silent auction in which 100% of the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. In 2007, Dance for a Cure raised more than $10,000. Over 350 performers from the ages of 3 to 18 years participated and made this huge contribution in the fight against cancer. Cancer is a disease that at some point will touch most everyone. This is a chance for local dance and pom teams to come together for a cause bigger than a trophy. For more information or to get your team involved please email Kim Miller-Clark at tigerpom1@msn.com. The second event that demands focus with the new year is attending NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS! Union, Jenks, Edison, Tulsa Memorial, McAlester and many others send their top rated cheer and pom teams to compete beyond the state level and represent their schools at National Cheer and Dance competitions. Universal Dance Association (UDA) holds their national competition at Disney World in Orlando, FL. It is held the first two weekends in February and is attended by over 500 top qualifying teams throughout the United States. Westmoore Varsity Pom (outside of OKC) is defending National Jazz Champion and runner up in Hip-Hop. Tulsa Memorial, Union, Jenks, and McAlester have also had top 10 finishes in the past few years, proving teams from Oklahoma are prestigious competitors. National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) is a cheer company that holds their national championships in December in Dallas, TX. Thousands of cheerleaders from across national bring their best stunts and skill to this nationally televised event. Last year not only did Union Varsity Cheer claim the title of Super Large Varsity National Champions but Cascia Hall claimed the Large Intermediate National Title. Showing the US once again that Oklahoma has some of the fiercest competitors in the spirit world!
