Top 10 Must See Wrestling Match-Ups

Friday, February 27, 2009

Top 10 match-ups at the state wrestling tournament this weekend. 10. Class 6A 130lb - Jeremy Goree, 34-0 (East Central) might be considered the favorite, but Austin Legg from Ponca City may be the one guy in the weight class that could take Goree the distance. Legg (36-8) has had a great season and may have an easier road to the finals. 9. Class 4A 160lb - Tuttle's Cole Gracey, 40-1 has dominated opponents this season and should face Catoosa wrestler Shawn Thomas (25-0) in the finals. 8. Class 5A 171lb - Chris Conover, 28-7 (Bixby) has a tough opening first round match against Deer Creek senior Casey Edgeman. Edgeman is 14-4 on the season, but if Conover can get past him he'll likely face Zac Corrales (32-5) from Lawton Mac. 7. Class 6A 135lb - Yukon's Corey Duncan, 30-2 is on a collision course with Del City wrestler Trayvon Lee (31-9). 6. Class 3A 160lb - Stephen Swan, 42-0 (Perry) puts his perfect record on the line against Sperry product Zac Wenzel (24-9). They faced each other before with Swan coming out on top. 5. Class 5A 215lb - Corey Dauphin, 34-3 (El Reno) is the favorite at 215, but his first round opponent doesn't know that. The junior from Grove, Weston Culvey (24-10) is thinking upset. Dauphin should get the win and move on to face Michael Anderson (31-2) from Northeast. 4. Class 4A 130lb - Our first of four wrestlers going for four straight titles. Jarrod Patterson (38-2) from Cushing has an opening opponent in Matt Shepard (15-14) from Catoosa that comes from a great program and roles with guys like Ryan Rosales and Dallas Bailey. Good early match for Patterson on his way to a fourth title. 3. Class 3A 125lb - Maybe the most exciting guy on the mat regardless of class. Ladd Rupp (43-1) from Perry should end up in the finals against Matt Kennedy (35-5) from Geary. The sophomore looks to spoil the hopes of Rupp as he goes for a fourth title. 2. Class 4A 171lb - Dallas Bailey (26-1) from Catoosa has an interesting opening match against Tim Steeds (28-9) from Piedmont. The Piedmont senior is a very good wrestler and should give Bailey all he can handle, but look for Bailey in the finals against Woodwards Zach White (31-1). It's the match everyone wants to see. The win would make Bailey a four-time state champion. 1. Class 6A 189lb - The future OSU wrestler, Chris Perry (32-0, Stillwater) looks to join the history books as he puts that perfect record on the line against Dillan Rodman (25-12) from Westmoore. But that bracket is loaded with good wrestlers like Dylan Ingram (22-7) from Sand Springs and Blake Rosholt (36-6) from Ponca City. Perry's overall high school record is 129-1. He should increase the win column and finish his high school career at Stillwater with one lose. There are only 19 wrestlers in the history of Oklahoma high school wrestling to become four-time state champions. Saturday we could add four more names to that list. Dallas Bailey (Catoosa) and Jarrod Patterson (Cushing) would be the first guys from their schools to accomplish four straight while Chris Perry and Ladd Rupp are following in the footsteps of Todd Chesbro (Stillwater) and Cecil Beisel (Perry).
