Norman girls beat No. 2 Del City

Saturday, February 14, 2009

Norman wasn't too happy when it dropped below Del City in the girls basketball rankings recently, despite an even number of losses and a head-to-head win over the Eagles early in the season. Friday night, the now No. 4-ranked Tigers proved they were right to feel slighted, beating No. 2 Del City 50-46 at home. "We had kind of a chip on our shoulder," Norman coach Matilda Mossman said. "This validated the earlier win for us." Norman won at Del City to start the season. The Tigers trailed by three points at halftime but led by five by the end of the third quarter. "We just changed our commitment to the game plan at halftime," Mossman said. "We didn't want to give up offensive rebounds, and we did that a little too much in the first half." Ashley Bruner and Kamra King led the way with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Bruner scored seven of her points in the third quarter, when Norman took control. Desiree Jeffries led the Eagles with 18 points but scored half of her total in the first quarter. Toni Young had 15. "This is a really important win for us," King said. "We just need to keep it going now." That won't be easy for the Tigers, who host No. 1 and undefeated Midwest City on Tuesday.
