ALL-STATE TEAM or All-State Game Team--which is it? I want to begin by congratulating every player being selected to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State team. Your talents helped make your team's achievements possible. I do question the fact as to whether or not this is truly an ALL-STATE team--the very best of Oklahoma high school football or whether this is a collection of the players who will be available to compete in the annual East-West All State gridiron classic played as the conclusion of the Coaches' Association Coaching Clinic. Because many of the state's premier players are told not to compete in this event by the college where they will play football, the All State game "ain't what it use to be..." I began by saying congratulations to those selected to play in the All State game...but I find it disappointing that just because a college tells a player they can't play in the game then the Coaches Association chooses not to acknowledge talents of that player as ALL-STATE status. I'm all for those that will play in the game but I think our Coaches' Association should do the same for those that have brought nationwide attention to Oklahoma High School football. In the past, the OCA would compile a list of "alternates" to complete the roster when a player was unable to participate for reasons already mentioned. Then, when that player was "picked up" that player was awarded the "All-State" honor. This way you have the BEST of the Best...and not the Best of the Rest. I'll conclude by again congratulating the players selected to play in the OCA All-State games...I just wish our coaches wouldn't turn away those athletes that helped to make your career resumes full of state championships, "Gold Balls" in the school trophy case and rings on your fingers.
