At the start of each season intensity is high on every age level. Starting at first grade young boys are exposed to full contact head to head football. When a child is exposed to this kind of sport at an early age it not only develops skills that will be used on the field, it develops skills that can be used for a lifetime. Intensity First and foremost youth football changes young minds in a positive way. For example, when a boy steps on to the field for the first time and is introduced to real football situations, it changes how they look at things. By the time the boy reaches high school his mind will be ready for the intensity level. Plays One of the biggest impacts that youth football can make on a child is the types of plays called. In most scenarios coaches will try to choose plays that relate to their schools high school team. This is a great tool for getting the players used to their schools offensive and defensive schemes. Competiveness Each year I see coaches getting more and more competitive. One of the ways this happening is in the technology being used. With video on their upcoming opponents, coaches are able to introduce to the players what they will be seeing the next Saturday. This is a great tool for easing players into high school and the competitive level. Positions When a player at a young age is assigned a position they usually do not change. Only reason that can explain this is the comfort level they have. Once they reach school ball in eighth grade they start having choices, but the boys tend to stay with the position they were given by the coaches they had in previous years. There is an up and down side to this. The up side is that each player knows what he is doing at the position that way when I comes time to play he knows what to do. On the flip side it does not give them room to grow on what other positions do. Luckily there are camps that players can attend to give them the knowledge they need to make a position switch. Teamwork The most important lesson that youth football teaches is teamwork and work ethic. Football is a team sport, you can ask any coach at any level and they will all say the same thing, "We have to work as one.". When boys are taught this at an early age it sticks in their head that they can't play as an individual. Teamwork along with the chemistry that they build with each other as they grow up makes a great high school football team.
