Week 8 Top Games

Friday, October 24, 2008

The final weeks of the high school football season are upon us. Three more games remaining in the regular season, starting with Week 8 this weekend. There are numerous great matchups to see on Friday. Here are the top 5 games to watch for Week 8: 1. Shawnee (6-1) at Guthrie (6-1) THis game is important because it is for second place in District 5A-2. The winner will most likely have the advantage of starting the playoffs at home while the loser will be on the road in the first round. Both teams loss are to Carl Albert. Defending Class 5A state champion Guthrie had its 20-game winning streak snapped a week ago to Carl Albert 16-13. So the Bluejays are looking to get back on track against a tough Shawnee team. The Wolves are the second-highest scorign team in the class. They have scored fewer than 35 points ina game just once. They will go up against a good Guthrie defense that has allowed just 48 points this season, the lowest in the class. The difference might be that the Bluejays also have a good offense, led by quarterback Keaton Callins and running back Josh King. 2. Putnam City North (5-2) at Mustang (7-0) Mustang can pretty much wrap up the District 6A-1 title with a win because Putnam North is the toughest remaining opponent on its schedule. It's a contrast in offensive styles as Mustang likes to throw the ball while Putnam North is one of the best running teams in the state. The Panthers average 290 yards rushing a game, led by the tailback tandem of Greg Lewis and Josh Booker. The two have combined for nearly 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns. The Panthers will also look to get back to their winning ways after losing to Edmond Santa Fe a week ago. Mustang, led by quarterback Kyle Webster, also feature a talented defense that allowed just 15 points and 222 yards a game. 3. Purcell (6-1) at Bethany (6-1) This game is most likely for the District 3A-2 title. Both teams have won six games ina row after starting the season with losses. Both teams also have high scoring offenses and weak defenses. So this game could be a high scoring, close game because both teams are similar. Both teams average 33 points and over 350 yards a game. The defenses could be the difference as Bethany allows 24 points a game while Purcell allows 17. But both give up a lot of yards. Both teams also know how to win close games because they have both been involved in quite a few this season. 4. Ardmore (5-2) at Carl Albert (6-1) Carl Albert has won six games in a row and can pretty much lock up the District 5A-2 title with a win. The Titans will have to guard overlooking Ardmore and being too satisfied after beating defending 5A champion Guthrie a week ago 16-13. Don't expect the Titans to do that, though, because they are well-coached. They also have a balanced offensive attack with running back David Oku and quarterback JT Realmuto. Ardmore will be looking to get back to its winning ways after losing to Shawnee a week ago 42-14. 5. Altus (5-2) at Lawton MacArthur (5-2) Two teams that have surprised for different reasons. Altus is in first place in District 5A-1 while Lawton MacArthur has struggled of late as fighting to stay in the playoff chase. Lawton Mac was considered a state title contendor before the season, but have suffered through injuries and two straight losses. The Highlanders will count on Jovan Harris, who has orally committed to Oklahoma. Altus has done its winning with its defense, which has allowed over 14 points just once this season.
