Midwest City No.1? Are we Sure?

Sunday, October 12, 2008

So being undefeated automatically makes you the states top team regardless of who you've played (or haven't played)? Maybe it doesn't mean anything in the long run, but if we're going to proclaim a team is No.1 in the state, shouldn't we at least look at it to make sure we've selected the right team? Midwest City is having a great season. Friday night they destroyed Lawton Ike, 49-7. The Bombers now look as if they might be the team to beat from the West instead of the previously crowned Norman North. Norman North will still figure heavy into the playoff picture, but many people felt with the lose to Mustang, they move down and No. 2 Midwest City moves up. So lets look at the numbers and see if Midwest City or Union should take that top spot. Midwest City has a record of 6-0. Union has a record of 5-1. Midwest City's opponents have scored 643 points (for) this season. Union's opponents have scored 941 points (for) this season. Midwest City's opponents have given up 1,124 points (against) this season. Union's opponents have given up 714 points (against) this season. Midwest City's opponents combine record is 10-26. Union's opponents combine record is 21-15. Midwest City has played one team with a winning record, Edmond Memorial (4-2). Union has played three teams with winning records and two with records of 3-3. Clearly the non-district schedule for Union was much more competitive than Midwest City's. In district the records are pretty close. Union's opponents are 8-10, while Midwest City's opponents are 7-11. Are we naming Midwest City No.1 because we're desperate to find a team on the west side to compete? Or are we saying the undefeated record means so much more than the strength of the teams you've beat? Both teams should finish the regular season without dropping a game. Maybe we'll get to see this match-up in the playoffs or in a championship game and let the players decide who should be No.1.

Preach Brother Sawyer. Union has continued to get better as the year has gone on. They should be the number one team. But I think Midwest City got it by default after the Norman North loss. Good thing about all this is that the rankings don't mean a thing.

The thing about Union is that they peak at just the right time. It seems that Broken Arrow peaked in Week One versus Union and have gradually drawn back each week. That hurts to say since I am a Tiger. I think Union is playing the best ball against the best opponents at this time in the season. Sure they have a loss, but their resume is much more impressive than MWC. The most telling stat is the competition wins and losses....MWC's opponents have only won 10 games combined. Two of Union's opponents nearly equal that with Muskogee (4 wins) and Jenks (5 wins). MWC thought they were the team to beat last year, until they met up with Jenks in the playoffs.
