Murphy Brothers

The cerebral football player is a highly sought after commodity. Today's student athlete is more than just a kid with quick feet or a big frame; they must possess a level of intelligence in order to keep up. The playbooks are as thick as most text books and they spend hours studying film preparing for their opponents. The Murphy brothers, Conor and Sean are the perfect examples of cerebral football players.

Besides being brothers, Conor and Sean Murphy have several things in common. They both are very intelligent, both are very good football players who played for coach Joe Medina, both went or currently attend Cascia Hall and both have very bright futures ahead. Older brother Conor has graced the pages of HSSTM before as a student-athlete from Cascia, but today he's a Harvard student who returned home for a summer visit. Younger brother Sean is a current student and football player at Cascia Hall who wants to follow in his brother's footsteps and attend an Ivy League school next year. "I'm hoping that some Ivy League school will think that I'm the greatest thing that has ever come around and pick me up. Hearing Conor talk about the Ivy League schools, it seems like a really good fit for me. Academics for me are a priority and I really feel like I would fit in on the East coast, especially north, I don't like the hot weather," said Sean.

But the transition from high school student-athlete to Ivy League student-athlete isn't an easy one. For Conor, his time at Cascia helped prepare him for what lied ahead. "Cascia did the best job of any school preparing me for Harvard for me personally. No school can just send you right in to Harvard and you're good to go, but Cascia provided me with great teachers, a great work load and great classes that challenged me. It was a great athletic environment with football, wrestling and baseball," said Conor.

Exceptional young men come from exceptional parents. For Conor and Sean their parents have been huge influences on their lives. Ross and Diane Murphy are big reasons these two future leaders are who they are today. "My dad without a doubt has been the biggest influence on my life, but my dad and my mom are both big influences on me," said Conor. For Sean the role models he looks up to are his parents and his older brother. "My dad and mom, Conor is someone I look up to."

The two-a-days are just around the corner for both young men. But for now, Conor continue interning gaining that valuable experience. "I've had several internships like Sean at Tulsa Bone and Joint and right now I'm interning at St. Johns as a surgeons orderly. My plan of action is to study sciences at Harvard and go into medical school and hopefully become a surgeon. Who knows if something better comes along, but right now the plan of action is medicine," said Conor.

Both young men sight their days at Cascia Hall as some of the best days of their young lives. Playing for coach Medina and wrestling for coach Ernie Jones is a highlight they can't talk about enough.

The Murphy brothers are fine examples of why we should be excited about the future. Their zest for life is based in faith, family and a commitment to being the best they can be. And that commitment will take these young men as far as they want to go.
