This year will be unlike any other for Memorial Pom. After 20 years of coaching the squad, Brenda Puckett will be retiring as coach and passing on the torch to one of her past students, Sabrina Gattis. This is a big transition for the Chargers pom squad. Puckett has grown the program over the last two decades and has developed a respected reputation throughout Oklahoma and the National Dance scene. Gattis is thrilled and honored about taking over as head coach, and admits she has "some big shoes to fill." She has big goals for the squad this year, including making it back into the top 10 teams at Universal Dance Association's Nationals. Last year the team grabbed the title of State Champs, but they plan to work even harder to achieve their ultimate goal at Nationals this year. She also hopes to build a junior program involving the younger grades so they can develop skills at an earlier age. Many high school football teams rely on feeder programs and a junior program for Memorial Pom will mean even better squad members in the future. Gattis comes to the squad bringing 10 years of coaching experience to the table and is bursting with new ideas about how to grow the program and make this year the best year yet for the girls. The squad will be kicking off the new season at UDA's camp at the University of Tulsa. Many local teams come together to learn and compete for a bid to Nationals. They will start preparing for camp right after tryouts, learning new routines and perfecting technique and skills. They plan to bring in a choreographer from out of state to bring the hottest dance moves to the Charger field this fall. The team, parents, and dance community all know and love Brenda Puckett and appreciate all she has given over the last 20 years. Gattis is excited about continuing the traditions of the squad and plans on building some new ones as well. Make sure to keep your eyes open for Memorial Pom on the sidelines this fall!
