Who won: Jenks and Union tied for the 5A boys title, while the Lady Trojans won 5A girls. Bishop Kelley (Tulsa) swept the boys and girls 4A titles. Cascia Hall won 3A boys and Bishop McGuinness captured 3A girls. How'd it happen: Jenks edged Edmond North for the 5A girls crown when the Lady Trojans' two singles and two doubles entries all advanced to the semifinal round. Kelley rolled to the 4A girls team title when all four entries won championships. McGuinness repeated Kelley's feat as Katelyn Connelly and Emma Land won singles and Emily Conrad/Whitney Ritchie and Jessica Camp/ Michelle Hotte took doubles. Union and Jenks split the 5A boys team title, the first time there had been a tie since Kelley and Duncan shared the 1994 4A championship. The Comets won their first 4A boys title since 2001, while Patrick Collins' fourth-consecutive singles championship helped Cascia Hall to its sixth-straight 3A team victory. Who surprised: There has been a decidedly foreign presence in college tennis for some time now. Apparently, that trend has officially reached Oklahoma high schools. Felix Brede, an exchange student from Germany attending Durant, knocked off Kelley's Cale Hammond 6-4, 7-5 to win the 4A No. 1 singles championship. "I played really well," an impressed Hammond told the Tulsa World. "He was so much bigger and stronger than me." In the 3A No. 1 singles final, Arturo Roth, a Swedish exchange student attending Classen, pushed Collins before falling 6-3, 6-4. Who impressed: Collins, bound for the University of Tulsa, became the fourth male player to win four-straight singles championships. Rebecca Parks, the Booker T. Washington senior who is bound for Princeton, won her third-straight No. 1 singles title by defeating Kaitlyn Ritchie of Bartlesville 6-3, 6-0 in the 5A final. Who starred: Connelly dug deep to pull out the 3A No. 1 singles championship over defending champ Natalie Friend of Metro Christian (Tulsa) , 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. That allowed the Irish a sweep of the four 3A divisions on their way to a ninth team championship. It also allowed Connelly to join siblings Andy, Lauren and Sarah as state title winners. Who to watch for next season: Connelly for starters. She's just a sophomore. So is Lili Johnson, who won the 5A No. 2 singles title for BTW, serving notice she should be ready to replace Parks next year at No. 1. They'll be playing for second in 4A boys again next year, when Kelley returns all six players who led the Comets to the state championship. One story you might have missed: Jenks has Edmond North to thank for tying Union for the 5A boys team title. The Huskies' Dickson Howell and Trey Cole defeated Union's Tanner Mathias and Ryan Proctor 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 to win the No. 1 doubles crown and deny the Redskins the outright team championship.
