For the Love of the Games

Tuesday, April 1, 2008

If you happen to find yourself near an outdoor basketball goal in Moore, you might find it refreshing to see three grown boys fiercely battling for a rebound and another two points.
Of course, if you wait a few minutes, and those same three might be out in the street lining up for a foot-race after the pickup game is over.
Taylor Gardner, Kyle Wormington and Taylor Johnson are teammates and friends at Moore High School. They are also sportsmen. All three are juniors, playing for the Lions’ football and baseball teams. Wormington also plays basketball while the two Taylors run track.
While Wormington is the only basketball player of the group, it still doesn’t stop the other two from challenging him to a battle every once in a while.
“They aren’t very good, to be honest,” he said amidst laughter from his two friends. “But if they get too humiliated, they’ll just make me go out and run against them.”
Wormington and Gardner have played together since second grade, while Johnson didn’t get in the group until much later.
All play multiple sports because they love them. Gardner even has visions of playing golf in college – if he can find time when he’s not fishing.
“There’s this little pond that he (Gardner) drug me out to one morning. He’s just pulling perch-after-perch out of that thing and I can’t even get a nibble,” said Wormington.
Three sports at a 6A school, not to mention part-time jobs and academic responsibilities– would they recommend such a workload to upcoming generations? All three say it’s a no-brainer, especially if you love what you do, but Johnson believes there’s something bigger at work.
“There’s so much about sports that I know I’ll use in my everyday life long after high school. I wouldn’t trade these experiences for anything.”
