Green Country League Weekend Wrap Up

Monday, February 8, 2010

Green Country High School Rugby started its league play this past Saturday across the state. Fine rugby was on display at the new home of high school rugby in Tulsa, being played on the plush fields next to Victory Christian. In the season opener, Brethren slugged it out with Broken Arrow and squeaked by with a narrow 11-10 victory in what many would consider a slight upset. The second match of the day was Bixby defeating Bartlesville 44-0 in Bartlesville’s first match in several years. The final match in Tulsa pitted two resurgent clubs loaded with talent this year. Union and Norman exhibited solid rucking and defensive play in the first half, with Union having the advantage 21-5 at half. In the second half, Union’s speed and grit proved too much for Norman to rally against, and the final tally was 35-10.

Elsewhere, Jenks traveled to Mustang to play a determined Stallions team. Despite their best efforts, Jenks lost 12-6. Also, Edmond traveled to Canton to play the growing club from parts unknown, and apparently there is rugby talent in remote areas of Oklahoma. Canton showed strong running and athleticism, and defeated Edmond 12-3. Next Saturday’s matches begin with Broken Arrow against Bixby at 11 a.m. in Tulsa. Attendance is free.
