Hall of Fame Mortgage was a Perfect Fit

Sunday, June 1, 2008

Battling cancer is one of the most feared things a family can endure. The VanZee Family has fought that battle three times, more than what any family should have to face. But if you ask them what they hope for the answer might surprise you. Wife and cancer survivor Coleen VanZee said, "One thing I'm looking forward to is finding a way to give more back and make a difference in someone else's life." Her husband and Assistant Principle at the high school, Eric VanZee said, "We want to pay it forward, to pass it along in a more deliberate way than we have in the past." The support of the Jenks community was evident when Jenks Pom mom Sabra Jouett learned of the VanZee's story and knew she had to act. The company Jouett works for, Hall of Fame Mortgage supported the decision to get involved and not only supported the effort, but pledged to help in any way. That support helped bring football legends Tony Dorsett and Mel Renfro to Tulsa. The journey to Tulsa meant a four hour drive from Dallas instead of a 40 minute flight, but the fact that they would have to ride in a car didn't deter the two one minute. "Well that's what we do and Mel (Renfro) can talk to you about it a little more. It's one of the things we've instilled in our company. We try to give back to the communities. That's what it's all about. I've been involved in sports my entire life from high school to the pro's and whenever I had the opportunity to give back I tried to do that," said Dorsett. At Jenks High School the VanZee Family was honored by Hall of Fame Mortgage and were presented a check to help pay for costly medical bills and expenses. During the presentation Dorsett said the community of Jenks was lucky to have a family like the VanZees and the communities support would help them win this battle a third time. Dorsett also led the student body in singing happy birthday to Coleen. Mel Renfro has worked with Hall of Fame Mortgage for several years now and one thing he believes in is giving back. "I work with about 30 charities and I do a lot of public relations and business development for Hall of Fame Mortgage and when I heard about the VanZee Family I knew we could help." Companies like Hall of Fame Mortgage are helping to raise awareness for issues that face families today and their involvement with former NFL players like Dorsett and Renfro help to shine light on families that deserve the support of the community. The VanZee Family will forever remember when Tony D. and Mel Renfro came to Tulsa to support them in their battle, but I have a feeling the Hall of Fame players will forever remember the VanZees.
