Protecting that Smile

Thursday, May 1, 2008

Having the proper protective sports gear is essential for minimizing the risks of injury while participating in sports. Mouth protectors or mouth guards are an important part of your protective gear. Different sports involve different levels of risk and potential injury. Use a mouth guard during any activity that could result in a blow to the face or mouth. It is estimated by the American Dental Association mouth guards prevent approximately 200,000 injuries each year in high school and college football. Mouth guards are designed to help cushion the mouth, teeth and jaw, preventing significant damage where sports injuries are most prevalent. While mouth guards are not required equipment in many sports, wearing one is an important precaution for athletes. A properly fit mouth guard can help prevent broken teeth and injuries to the lips, tongue, face or jaw. It will stay in place while you are wearing it, making it easy for you to talk and breath. A custom mouth guard is particularly important for people who wear braces. A blow to the face could not only damage the brackets or other fixed orthodontic appliances but more importantly, a mouth guard provides a barrier between the braces and your cheek or lips, limiting the risk of soft tissue injuries. If you have a retainer or other removable appliance, do not wear it during any contact sports unless directed by your dentist. There are basically two types of mouth guards: Pre-fabricated: A pre-fabricated mouth guard can be purchased at stores, these mouth guards are often only offered in a general size offerings. Only certain types work if an individual is undergoing orthodontic treatment. Custom mouth guards: Your dentist or orthodontist can create a special mouth guard that will provide comfort and proper fit. A custom mouth guard can be individually designed and constructed in the dental office or according to your dentist's specifications and your needs. With the help of your dentist or orthodontist, you can select the right type of mouth guard for you or your child's sport of choice to provide the best protection for your smile.
