Mitcham has seen program come along way

Houston, TX

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Cypress (Texas) Creek High School’s Brent Mitcham has seen the Cougar program go from a district basement dweller to the favorite in league in just three years.

“I started as a sophomore and we went 2-8,” he said. “After that, we were just tired of it. We turned the program around by working a lot harder and doing extra work during the offseason. Last year we started having team meetings on Wednesday nights and just got closer as a team. We held everyone accountable for their actions. That has been a big part of our success.”

Cy Creek is 5-0 and Mitcham has been providing a tremendous spark on offense with his track-like speed. His athleticism has earned him official offers from North Texas, Air Force and Portland State, and several other schools are nearing an offer.

“I’m setting up an official visits to Texas Tech, Houston and Rice,” he said. “If I go to those, the coaches are saying I’ll get an offer. Vanderbilt, Iowa and Northwestern are the same way.”

The 5-foot-10 inside receiver wants to play in a spread offense or a system that will fit his talents. His football speed translates to the track, where he reached the regional track meet in the 100 and 200-meters and a 4 x 400 relay.

“I love the Texas Tech-type of offense,” he said. “I really feel I can help a program that runs that style of offense.”

For now, Mitcham is concentrating on leading the Cougar program to a state playoff run, but the recruiting process is just a hiccup away.
