Strake Jesuit senior lineman Brett Provenzano won the title of top
football scholar-athlete in Greater Houston for 2008 at the annual Bridgeway
Capital Management Scholar-Athlete Luncheon, presented by the Touchdown Club
of Houston.
Guest speaker was Charles Breithaupt, athletic director of the
University Interscholastic League.
By being named the top football scholar-athlete in the area,
Provenzano receives a $1,500 scholarship to the college of his choice. In
addition to being All-District honorable mention for two years in football,
Provenzano was captain of the Strake Jesuit varsity wrestling program and
was on the varsity rugby team. He also volunteered at the Star of Hope
mission. His football coach with the Crusaders is Ron Counter.
Finishing second at the luncheon was Cypress Woods lineman Anthony
Villamagna. He received a $1,250 scholarship to the college of his choice.
His coach is David Jones.
There was a tie for third place, each earning $1,000 scholarships.
Sharing those honors are The Woodlands center Sean Finney and Houston Lamar
lineman Michael Miller. Finney is coached by Mark Schmid and Miller is
coached by Tom Nolen.
The Touchdown Club has awarded about $140,000 in scholarships to
approximately 200 Greater Houston athletes in the past 10 years. The Club
also has put in about $140,000 in weights and weight equipment into 27
Greater Houston high schools through its Weight Refurbishing Program in the
past seven years. The Club also had helped bring Play It Smart to HISD,
where academic coaches help male and female athletes with their education.
