The Woodlands’ Katie Messing is one of top prospects in the nation as a sophomore

Katie Messing may only be a sophomore, but The Woodlands 6-foot-4 middle blocker looks like the most experience player on the floor every time she plays a match.
That may have something to do with her participation in club volleyball, or her innate competitive spirit, but whatever is, it is helping the Highlanders immensely this season.
Messing has been playing volleyball for several years and for the last three, she has played up a year on her club volleyball team. So, she is used to older, more experienced players surrounding her. She also picked up a lot from her older sister Michelle, who was the other middle for The Woodlands in 2007. Michelle is now playing at Louisiana-Monroe.

“I am younger than a lot of people think, but I do have a lot of experience,” said the 16-year old. “This sport has been a part of my life for awhile now too and I strive to get better.”

Messing is the kill and block leader for the Highlanders this season and is feeding off of bad memories to get her team deep into the playoffs this year.
After The Woodlands lost a tough one to College Park in five games earlier in the season, Messing held on to that feeling. She then used it to motivate herself and her teammates to come back two weeks later and sweep College Park.

“I don’t like to lose but in that case, it pushed me so I guess it can be a good thing sometimes if you learn from it,” she said.
She will try to take that same attitude into the playoffs this season as The Woodlands pile through a tough Region II.
“I think we have prepared ourselves well, though,” Messing said. “We played so many tough teams early in the season in those preseason tournaments, so we have seen what great teams look like.”

Messing is used to top notch competition. On top of her high school and club seasons, Messing has also participated in the USA High Performance Championships.  In 2006 she was on the Lone Star Region team, and in 2007 and 2008 she was on USA High Performance Teams. With those teams, she has had the opportunity to play national teams from New Zealand, Peru and Chile among others.

“I really like playing and preparing for international competition,” Messing said.

The sophomore has not determined where she will play at the next level, but is already getting looks from several Division I schools.

“A few years ago, I wouldn’t have dreamed that I would be getting recruited and thinking about college already,” she said. “But it has been a lot of fun and I am looking forward to playing for The Woodlands and hopefully going far in the playoffs while I am here.”•
