Last season, the city of Houston had over 150 Division I athletes. This year is not as deep, but several athletes are emerging as the season begins to wind down.

Alvin’s Ashton Jefferson is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound athlete who carries the load for the Yellow Jackets. He is second in the area in rushing with 1,300 yards and 13 touchdowns, but his durability and athleticism is what is grabbing the attention of college coaches.

“Ashton has grades, he’s a regional qualifier in the high jump, he’s a starter on the basketball team and he’s a can’t-miss football player,” Alvin coach Jeff Dungen said. “I put him up against anyone at the running back position right now.”

Jefferson went on an unofficial visit last weekend to Texas A&M, and is hearing from Minnesota and Utah as well.

“He’s very under-recruited and I think it’s because we haven’t had a lot of kids come out of Alvin in the past few years,” he said. “He’s the total package.”

Leading the area in rushing is Bo Snelson of Pasadena Memorial. The 5-foot-9 back has been tearing up opposing defenses the past two seasons, compiling over 3,700 yards and 40 touchdowns.

“He really likes the Naval Academy and Dartmouth,” Pasadena Memorial coach John Snelson said. “Someone is going to get a heck of a football player. He’s a prideful guy and wants to go somewhere that wants him.”

The entire Ivy League has offered him, while Air Force, Army, Houston and Rice are also sincerely recruiting him.

C.E. King’s Alvester Alexander has also exploded on the scene after two injury-marred seasons. The 6-foot, 195-pound back has rushed for over 1,000 yards and 16 touchdowns.

“Alvester is a slasher and catches the ball well,” coach Mike Malkowski said. “Some of the recruiters are projecting him on defense, but I really think he can run the ball 25 times a game.”

Alexander is being recruited by Baylor and SMU to date.

On defense, Klein Collins linebacker Jessie Beauchamp is the top inside linebacker in his district. He is hearing from some Division I-AA schools, but has yet to get offered.

“He’s another Dat Nguyen,” coach Drew Svaboda said. “Ask any coach in the district for the top linebackers and he’s on everyone’s list.”

North Shore’s Daniel Salinas got on the board last week with offers from Frenso State and New Mexico State. He will be deciding soon, seeing that he will be graduating in December.

“I need to talk with my family, but my decision will come pretty soon,” he said. “I really like the thought of playing on the west coast and with some of my teammates.”

North Shore’s Chase McEntee is playing at Fresno State as a true freshman and Mustang Terrence Kindle committed there last week.
