It’s all Geek to Me

A teen’s worst nightmare used to be having the car keys taken away as punishment for a myriad of age-related infractions.
These days, the threat of confiscating a cell phone, iPod or laptop is enough to induce a serious case of texting, iTunes or MySpace withdrawals.
As the kids who used to be considered geeks lead the way as the new cool group with the latest technology, “revenge of the nerds” has never been sweeter.
Oh, but not all kids are knowledgeable enough to don the uniform of the all-knowing Geek Squad. They just want to stay connected to all that technology has to offer.
A good example is the Donaldson family of Katy. Brittany and Shane attend Seven Lakes High School and are active in sports, extracurricular activities and after-school jobs.
They use their technology to keep their busy schedules organized, access information that is important to them, and for Brittany, have her favorite music on hand. Shane, a baseball player, likes to look up team and player rankings and keep an eye on how his team stacks up locally, nationally and even internationally.
Eleven-year-old Brooke attends WoodCreek Junior High and says her cell phone is a must for keeping in touch with her friends and out-of-state relatives. She also adheres to the school policy of having phones out-of-sight and turned off during school hours. Once home, all of the teens can get online and download homework assignments and access school news and events.
Some good news for parents feeling the pressure to keep their kids up to speed with the latest and greatest is that prices for laptops and other items have come down. Also, stores like Best Buy have included a mobile store within their locations that carry all the brands and carriers and can support you for the life of the phone in a no commission sales environment.
That’s not to say that all kids around here have to have the most expensive items. I seem to remember the old days of rotary phones and party lines, not to mention pocket protectors and the audio visual club. Not that there was anything wrong with that, but we just weren’t as sophisticated back then. I’m just saying!•
