Stepping Up
Houston, TX

Cy-Fair High School’s Chiney Ogwumike has grown up a lot since 2007, and not just because she spurted up to a little over 6-foot-3 over the summer. The Cy-Fair junior is the only piece of the Bobcats’ state-semifinalist volleyball team that is back this year.
Ogwumike, who was a star on the net for the Bobcats with her sister, Nneka, last year, was the youngest player on that team and now, even though she isn’t the oldest on the team, she is the squad’s only veteran.
“It’s a lot different this year,” Ogwumike said. “Last year I played hard and I was outgoing and everything. But this year, I really feel like I am leader.”
That is obvious when watching her with her team. On Sept. 23, Cy-Fair’s first Post-Ike volleyball match, Ogwumike kept the troops calm and focused for an hour delay while the officials were making their way over to the Cypress Creek gym.
Then Ogwumike proceeded to lead the Bobcats with 25 kills in the four-game district win.
Ogwumike is getting good practice with her leadership skills now and she will need those during basketball season, when she will definitely be expected to be a leader for the defending Class 5-A state champions.
“It’s weird without Nneka here, but I am so proud of her and I will do my best here without her,” Ogwumike said.
While she continues to be one of the top volleyball players in the area with her power at the net, and will be one of the top basketball players as well, Ogwumike is garnering attention from several schools for both sports.
She isn’t sure what she will be playing at the next level, and she isn’t worried about it since she has two more years of high school ahead of her.
“I am just enjoying everything,” she said.•
