There were several stories that came out of last weekend's slate of football.

Turnovers Galore

In a district 13-5A match up between Klein Forest (2-1) and Klein Oak (2-0) there were a combined 10 turnovers between both teams. Klein Forest laid claim to most of the turnovers, 8, by fumbling 4 times and QB Vernon Caldwell connecting with Oak defenders as much as he did with his receivers. Caldwell completed only 4 of his 16 passes with 4 interceptions, 3 of which were returned for Touchdowns. Caldwell threw picks on Forests first two possessions, one to S Luke Muncie and the other to Oak DT Cody Davis, who made an athletic one-handed catch on a screen and proceeded to run it in from 4 yards. Davis also returned another interception for touchdown, this one from 15 yards. Forest just couldn’t get in a groove all night as Oak was prepared for stud RB Dominic Wilkins who only rushed for 28 yards on 17 carries. Oak wasn’t perfect themselves as they also fumbled once and QB Andy Wilson threw an interception. Forest was out of this one early as is was 27-0 at half and went on to getting beat 34-6.

Top 4A Teams in Houston Clash

Friendswood (2-0) and Texas City (2-1) are by far the best two teams in district 24-4A and in most polls both are ranked in the top 4 in Houston. Friendswood knocked off last year’s Division 1 finalist Dayton in its opener while Texas City toppled Division II champs Lamar Consolidated. Friendswood loves to throw, and they did just that on Friday night. QB Jacob Karam didn’t have an especially good night percentage wise, completing only 44 percent of his passes, but still managed to gain 286 yards and 3 scores. WR Andre Gautreuax has been Karam’s favorite target all year and they connected 6 more times on Friday for 186 yards and 2 touchdowns. Texas City RB Justin Branch was the leader in rushing yards in the area before the game started, but managed to muster only 45 yards on the night. Texas City had a 16-14 lead at half, but couldn’t contain Karam enough to get the win. Karam threw 2 scores in the second half to lead the mustangs to a 27-22 victory. Friendswood’s defense has been the surprise thus far in the season, holding Dayton and Texas City’s high powered offense to 43 points combined.

Cy-Woods For Real?

The Wildcat’s of Cy-Woods are off to an unusually good start for a first year varsity program. Coach David Jones’ squad won their first ever varsity game over A&M Consolidated 28-17 and hung tough with a Cy-Ridge team that has a backfield containing Russell Shepard (LSU) and Hasan Lipscomb (Minnesota). Cy-Ridge eventually won 43-41, but it was a performance that showed the rest of 15-5A that they are not to be taken lightly. Coach Jones likes to air it out and he’s got a QB in Lucas Devilliers who is very good at doing so. In their 2 games Devilliers has thrown it 70 times, completing 44, while having yet to throw an interception. L.D. is also the leading rusher on the team with just over a hundred yards and two scores. Cy-Woods junior varsity team from a year ago beat Marshall’s varsity team by 40 and won two other games against varsity programs on their way to an undefeated season.

First Win

It’s been a long time coming for the Eisenhower Eagles, but they finally got their first win last Friday with a convincing 39-13 victory over the Kingwood Mustangs. The Eagles were one of the more highly touted teams in Houston before the season started because of the amount of talent they had returning. They quickly started with two ugly losses against Hightower and North Shore and just played their first game in 3 weeks because of the delay caused by hurricane Ike. The 5-star and #1 rated safety in the country Craig Loston (Clemson) hasn’t played nearly as well as capable and QB Kenneth Guiton just can’t seem to get his playmaking wide outs, Greg Timmons (Texas) and Jaz Reynolds, into the mix. RB Curtis McGregor finally found his groove against Kingwood rushing for 247 yards. In the two previous games he had 18 combined rushing yards. Eisenhower should light-up Macarthur this weekend and move to 2-0 in district. The playoffs shouldn’t be a question, but lets hope that Ike can get their offensive woes worked out before then because this team is much too talented to get bounced early.
