While there is no scientific analysis available to document the economic impact of having a championship football team and highly respected athletic programs in Katy, it is obvious to those that live in the area that the impact is significant.
Katy High School holds five state championship football titles starting in 1959 and continuing with top bragging rights in 1997, 2000, 2003 and 2007.
One of the most exciting results of that is the book, movie and reality television series Katy Nation: Where Football Gets Real by author Dexter Clay. Clay hopes to capture some of that Katy magic and bring it to the attention of the entire nation. Filming for the network pilot began at Rhodes Stadium in mid-August.
Lance LaCour, the president of the Katy Area Economic Development Council, explains that even before Katy Nation, the tremendous amount of publicity received from Katy sports programs was already enough to put Katy on the map.
“There is no doubt that the reputation that Katy has for quality sports programs has had a tremendous marketing impact on the community,” says LaCour, “We have more teams than ever and more kids that want to be involved. We also have an incredible amount of people in the community who are supportive of the efforts of all of the teams.”
Programs such as Katy Youth Football and Houston Youth Football Leagues, along with other popular programs, train kids from an early age to carry on the championship tradition that Katy is known for and exist because of much of the success of high school athletes.
Local businesses also experience the positive effects of having an athletic-minded and youth-oriented atmosphere. Sales for sports equipment, clothing and associated products are brisk and allow for a mutually beneficial relationship to prosper.
Area restaurants are feeling the love too. “I was at Denny’s recently,” says LaCour and the entire place was filled with red shirts.”
Many teams are loyal to favorite places that make their establishments team-friendly to local athletes.
As Katy continues to grow, so do the opportunities for our kids to excel in sports and sports related-activities. Along the way learning the importance of physical and mental toughness, hard work, leadership and not settling for anything less than the best-all leading to our economic leaders of the future.
