Alief Taylor’s Deaires Cotton, Kelvin King and Jessie Dickson make up one of the city’s toughest defenses

Alief Taylor High School seems to get overlooked as one of the top Houston-area hotbeds for high school football players. Dallas Cowboy tight end Martellus Bennett put the Lion program on the national map four years ago, but ever since it’s been relatively quiet at the Alief school.

“We’ve got some athletes here and I really like our defense,” coach Trevor White smiled while watching two-a-days. “When you have senior leadership that works as hard as these guys, it makes a huge difference.”

While White was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach, he has the luxury of one of the top defensive fronts in the city.
“Our guys are coming to get the quarterback,” he said. “They can get up the field and create havoc, which enables our defensive backs to not gamble as much. They are the heart of our team.”

Leading the Red Storm defense are Jessie Dickson (6-foot-2, 210-pounds) and Emerson Evans (6-foot-2, 220-pounds) on the edge of the defensive line and junior run-stopper DeAires Cotton (6-foot-3, 270-pounds). Kelvin King (6-foot-2, 220-pounds) is the homerun hitter at outside linebacker.

“Jessie and Emerson just don’t stop,” White said. “They are the motor guys and are so explosive. Cotton controls the middle and Kelvin cleans up as our big hitter.”

The spring was fruitful for the Lion’s den as King verbally committed to the University of Houston and Evans to the University of Nebraska. Dickson is being courted by schools including Utah and SMU, while Cotton will be one of the top Houston prospects in 2010.

“We’ve been playing on varsity for three seasons and the chemistry is just right,” Dickson said. “We are expecting big things this year and our defense should be nasty.”

While the defense is the headliner, quarterback Rodney Owens returns to direct Taylor’s offense. His body guard is 6-foot-6 Jonte Perry, who stars at left tackle.

It seems that the sleeping giant is starting to stir again in west Houston, much to the disappointment of their district-mates.•
