Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, Inc.

MECHANICSBURG, PA – Tuesday, July 29, 2008

The PIAA Board of Directors voted to grant relief from the application of ARTICLE XVI, SEASON AND OUT-OF-SEASON RULES AND REGULATIONS, Section 2, Rules and Regulations, C, Football, 1, of the PIAA By-Laws, to
any student who (1) participated in an “organized contact football camp” outside the PIAA defined
football season; (2) will be attending a PIAA member school this fall that sponsors
football; and (3) desires to play interscholastic football for that member school. This relief is
granted for the period beginning Monday, June 2, 2008 and ending Friday, August 1, 2008. At that meeting, the PIAA Board of Directors expressed serious concern regarding individuals who are running organized contact football camps, especially throughout the commonwealth, and their apparent disregard for the eligibility of student-athletes at PIAA member schools sponsoring that sport.

PIAA Executive Director Brad Cashman explained: “Several camps across and outside the boundaries of the commonwealth jeopardized the eligibility of student-athletes by allowing them to participate in organized contact activities outside the defined football season. By granting relief from the application of ARTICLE XVI, Section 2-C-1, the Board of Directors restored the eligibility of those student-athletes who would have otherwise lost their eligibility to play football this fall at a PIAA member school by their participation in those camps.”

In further action taken at that meeting, the PIAA Board of Directors directed the Administrative
Staff to identify those contact football camps and communicate with those individuals
responsible for organizing those camps regarding the application of ARTICLE XVI, SEASON
AND OUT-OF-SEASON RULES AND REGULATIONS, Section 2, Rules and Regulations, C,
Football, 1, of the PIAA By-Laws, and the effect that Rule has on the eligibility of studentathletes
attending PIAA member schools.
