Get Your Popcorn Ready!

Greater Reading, PA

Imagine sitting in a cozy cushioned seat indulging in a bag of butter drenched pop corn, so buttery it leaks out of the bottom of the bag, along with a cup of your favorite soft drink. Think of some of those great movies you saw in the theatres. Some of the parents may have saw Jaws or even Rocky when they hit the box office. It feels exactly like that, minus the butter soaked popcorn and cushiony seats at the theatre. On Friday nights during halftime at Fleetwood High School it sure has the feeling of the movies. The Fleetwood Marching Band has they're own version of Friday night-lights. It includes the game of football, which is only the appetizer for what the band provides. The band has a list of classic pieces, which they perform only at home events. The only time the band takes to the highway is when they play their rival, the Cougars of Kutztown Talk about home field advantage! The choices include the theme from Jaws where the color guard acts as if they are searching for a shark while walking on the field. At the end of the piece the entire band screams "Shark!" Along with that comes a piece from Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark. Which, reminds me they are now shooting a new film. The remaining scores that they perform include a few pieces from Jurassic Park as well as the famous Duel of the Fates from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. During the game the band includes the famous song The Final Countdown which the fans and players take a strong liking to. "We try and keep everyone involved and help create a nice cheering section for the football team," said Ebersole. Before all of this could come to play Ebersole met with everyone that would take part in this including the band front directors, percussion director and assistant director. After some discussion they believed it would be a good idea to bring the movies to the football field. When the students were presented with the idea they responded very well and liked the idea that they would be playing tunes that people will remember from when saw these movies in the theatre or even renting it from the local video store. "Being able to be at the game and play tunes that gets the team excited to play makes it a lot more fun of an atmosphere," said trombone player Matt Haelig who is a senior in the band. I'm sure there are fans that enjoy listening to classical scores from famous movies. Bring your own popcorn on a Friday night for one of the Tiger's home football games and as always sit back and 'Enjoy the Show." .
