HSSTM: First, let’s start with the fact that you coach cross-country, spring track and the girls’ varsity basketball team. Do you have a favorite sport to coach?

Myer: My favorite sport to coach is definitely basketball. It is much more intense because of my involvement in practices as well as in games. I do enjoy coaching the running sports, but basketball is my favorite sport to coach, play, and watch. I love coaching basketball because it is such a team game.

HSSTM: Coaches take different approaches when teaching the various aspects of their sport to their players. What do you try to instill in your players?

Myer: What we are trying to do is develop a work ethic here, and a lot of it depends on the coach as well as the senior leadership. The team is senior oriented. We like to reward the seniors for all their years of hard work, for all they’ve done for the team. Secondly, I believe you need to share the ball and not play selfish basketball. Since I’ve been here, the kids have really bought into that concept; and it shows because we have been a very good passing team. Finally, we want our players to be able to play solid defense. There isn’t a lot of glamour in playing defense, but that is part of being a team and an unselfish player.

HSSTM: Defense is a key part of your philosophy. Do you believe in the saying that defense wins championships?

Myer: Absolutely. I can honestly say I have learned the entire defensive philosophy from Reggie Wise whom I played for here at Wilson. He was always a defense-first coach. We like to play man-to-man opposed to a zone defense. It is no secret what we are going to do when we take the court; we’re going to get out on the floor and guard man-to-man. I believe if you work hard on man-to-man defense you can dictate to the other team how the game unfolds.

HSSTM: What traits do your players need in order to be successful on the basketball court?

Myer: To play in our program, you need to be able to guard someone on the basketball floor. Our forwards have to be able to rebound offensively and defensively while our guards need to be able to pressure someone and keep their opponent in front of them. Being a threat to score is huge as well. We’ve been fortunate the last few years; we’ve had guards like senior Vanessa Rivera, junior Jess Ebner, and Taylor Napoli (‘07) who can play both ends of the floor. It is great to have players who can create turnovers and put up double-digit points during a game.

HSSTM: You have coached at other schools throughout Berks County. Are there any other coaching opportunities that you would like to explore before you finish your career?

Myer: I love my job and how it is set up now. I have three young children so I know my days of coaching three sports are going to end. I could seek a college level job at some point down the road. I don’t have any desire to do that now because there is something about teaching and coaching high school kids that I really enjoy. Watching them develop is really special. Wilson is a great place to coach because of the support we receive from the administration, the parents, and the community.
