Every sport requires self-discipline, rigorous work, and a positive eye toward success. Cheerleading is no exception. The happy and spirited squad from Daniel Boone pairs hard work and creativity with a positive attitude for a winning experience on the squad, as well as on the courts and fields of Daniel Boone athletics.
The 19-member, all-female squad consisting of freshman, sophomores, and juniors has worked under the direction of Daniel Boone graduate Pam Eiche for the past eight years. Pam’s policy of academics before competitions makes for a well-rounded program without affecting the team’s spirit or ability to perform on a competitive level. “They are very unique,” stated Eiche. “Everything they do, they do on their own.” Eiche gives them feedback, but the girls choreograph their routines themselves. The team competes within the county and beyond. In 2005 the squad went to Nationals in Virginia Beach and won Best High School Girls’ Team. They also won the Berks competition at Muhlenberg in 2006. “We have been very successful in the competitions we’ve entered,” said Eiche.
The girls cheer year round, managing the physical rigors as well as the social aspects of maintaining a solid team. In addition to their regular practices, the team runs a mile every day to stay in shape. Some team members find added ways to stay fit. Cheerleader Grace Fiset integrates ballet into her regular workout. “Ballet is structured movement, and it has really helped with cheerleading.” The squad values each member, and places a high level of importance on the relationships between them. Captains Kristie Robinson and Eryn Jo agree, “We’re very close. We just planned a squad breakfast to Shady Maple. It gives us a chance to spend more time together.” The girls take turns having parties at their houses, go to movies together, and basically find any way to have fun while strengthening the bonds between them.
While the Blazers Cheeleaders turn out as a team, each member enjoys the experience from a different perspective. When asked about their favorite part of cheering, the girls’ responses were varied. “I love the stunting, school spirit, and pep rallies, and getting our students fired up for the games,” responded junior Lauren Kriczky. “Working as a team and being able to bring the student body together,” adds junior Gabrielle Williams. Ariana Fermamento and Alissa Barker, also juniors, admit, “Our favorite thing is being flyers and getting tossed in the air. It is so..much..fun!”
It’s quite evident that these girls work together beautifully. They truly serve as a shining example of a united team effort. Go Blazers!!
