Wilson Girls Getting Their Kicks With Soccer
Greater Reading, PA

You don’t have to go outside Berks County to see an impressive youth soccer team. Wilson Chaos U-12 girls team is an accomplished program, the core of which was formed in 2005. Since that time, the team has earned 13 first place finishes in tournaments throughout the region.
After winning the Reading Berks League in 2005 and 2006 in their respective age division, Team Chaos sought to elevate their level of play. The girls entered the highly competitive PAGS league (Philadelphia Area Girls Soccer) in the Premiership division. It was an eye-opening experience for the girls as they were competing against higher-caliber teams. The girls finished the season disappointed that they did not make the playoffs but motivated that they could play competitive soccer with the best of them.
After the fall season, the team jumped right into the winter session. In January, Wilson Chaos won the BodyZone Indoor league and made the quarter-finals of the 2008 EPYSA Indoor State Cup. A major highlight for the team was their win at the Golden Goal Youth National Olympics in Lake George, New York, this past August. The experience at Golden Goal was amazing. The team shared a clubhouse for an entire week; they ate, slept and played soccer in the Olympic Village for 6 days. The girls formed a great bond that is carried on and off the field. Kaitlyn Showalter recalls, "Whether we were in our team cabin being our normal silly selves, playing soccer on the most amazing fields, doing team bonding drills, making friends with players from different teams, or holding up that huge Golden Goal trophy- Golden Goal is one special memory that I will remember forever!" Cayla Spatz agrees, "Our team had so much fun together at Golden Goal Camp. I can't wait until next year so we can go again." Coach Andrea Hetrick attributes their success to hard work, great athleticism and a true passion for the sport. “Each and every girl is a team player who wants to be challenged, so we keep raising the bar. We have adopted the saying – ‘What doesn’t kill us will only make us stronger.’”
This past fall, the team brought in Kayla Marquette and Lindsey Langdon, two Wilson High School soccer players, as assistant coaches. This helped give the girls a different perspective of the game. Having girls they looked up to coach them was a very motivating and fun experience for everyone. This spring, Bruce Seidel will also be joining the coaching staff. Bruce was Wilson Central Junior High school’s head soccer coach for 7 years.
Team Chaos continues to thrive because of the dedication and commitment that both the players and parents have to the game and each other. The team is like an extended family, and that is a true recipe for success. Coach Hetrick: “After every hard fought game we have, it never fails. The opposing coach approaches me and asks, ‘So where are you guys from?’ I simply smile and say, ‘…Berks County.’”
