10. The Spartans from Wyomissing found their way into the Top 10 by winning 3 of their last 5 league games including a big 8-point win vs Division III runner-up, Hamburg. Wyomissing was inconsistent most of the season, putting together only 2 two-game winning streaks; but the Spartans ripped through DIII, winning 4 of 5 games and losing only to division champion Schuylkill Valley. The Spartans swept the season series with division rivals Antietam and Kutztown. Katherine Restrepo, 14.7ppg, led the way for Wyo followed by Cherise Key (11.0ppg) and Jemma Giannotti (6.0ppg). Wyomissing’s 46ppg was a division best.
9. Avenging an earlier season loss at division rival Twin Valley, Fleetwood returned the favor and beat the Raiders in a highly contested 1 point game on January 24th. This set up a key match-up between our # 9 pick Fleetwood Tigers and Muhlenberg on the last game of the regular season. The Muhls’ win gave Twin Valley the 2nd spot in Division II, leaving Fleetwood only 1 game out of the county playoffs. The Tigers averaged a division high 44ppg, led by Rebecca Werstler’s 9.1ppg. Caitlin Bamberger and Kaylyn Wapinsky followed with 9.0ppg and 8.7ppg respectively. Werstler and Wapinsky were among the leaders in 3-point shooting. Victoria Kinek added 6.1ppg and also challenged from outside the arc.
8. Our 8th spot is held by the Hamburg Hawks who were by far the toughest team to score against in DIII. They gave up just 36ppg, the best average in their division. While strong defensively, the Hawks were still able to put up 40ppg and were the only team to have two players in the top 15 in scoring average. Lauren Romig (15.1ppg) and Katrina Seymour (11.6ppg) placed 5th and 14th respectively. Taylor Seitzinger (3.6ppg) and Denise Thomas (2.9ppg) handled the rebounding duties while Emily Peters contributed 4.4ppg and Deidre Fetherolf knocked down 3.4ppg. Hamburg registered a big league win against Central Catholic on the last night of the season to secure their Division III runner-up position.
7. With only Erin McGinnis (10.6ppg) scoring in double figures for Twin Valley, the Raiders relied more on spreading the ball around than directing their offense through one player. Twin Valley’s 7-5 league record was good enough for 2nd in Division II, one game better than Fleetwood. A huge 37-35 win vs Muhlenberg avenged an earlier loss to the Muhls and another two big wins against Daniel Boone and Conrad Weiser closed out the regular season, locking up their No. 2 spot. Team defense was key as the Raiders yielded only 36ppg, 2nd best in their division. Chelsea Ahearn (7.9ppg) provided the long-range threat and Katie Hix (7.1ppg) was solid under the boards. Carrie Weinhold, added 6.2ppg for a well-balanced attack.
6. Jumping out to 6 consecutive league wins kept Holy Name in the hunt for the division crown all season. Led by Rachel Skolny (16.3ppg), the Blue Jays racked up a big win against Hamburg and beat rival Wyomissing twice to grab the second spot in Division IV. Statistically, the Blue Jays were the offensive power of the division, scoring an average 45.52ppg (Wyomissing scored 45ppg). The Blue Jays only losses came at the hands of Schuylkill Valley and Central Catholic (twice). Samantha Scaffidi’s (7ppg) timely buckets, and Lauren Noga’s (6.1ppg) key rebounds gave Holy Name the necessary firepower to drive them to a 10-3 league record. This cemented the Jays firmly at number 6 in our Top 10.
5. Allowing the fewest points in the league (762), Central Catholic’s tough defense led them to an 11-2 mark and the Division IV crown. They went undefeated within DIV play, losing only to DIII champion Schuylkill Valley and to DIII runner-up Hamburg. The Cardinals ran off a string of 9 straight league wins before finally dropping their finale to Hamburg. A huge 38-34 win against Holy Name in their second meeting helped solidify their hold on the top spot. In 9 of their 11 wins, Central Catholic’s margin of victory was greater than 10 points. Krissy Wrobel led the Cards, averaging 13ppg while handling most of the rebounding duties. Casey Hoffmann (10ppg) provided the outside shooting while Rachel Schleicher (9.4ppg) and Rebecca Reinhart (4.7ppg) were also standouts.
4. Finishing their regular season with 7 wins in 9 games, Muhlenberg sits in 4th position in this year’s ranking. Led all season by Amanda Mikatavage (12ppg), the Muhls started their league play with a big DI win against Governor Mifflin followed by an inter-division win against Twin Valley. The 36-20 victory over the Raiders gave Muhlenberg coach Reggie Weiss his 500th career win. Their only league losses came at the hands of Wilson, and then in consecutive nights, Twin Valley and Reading. Liz Hornberger (7.7ppg) provided the outside threat and Tamera Lobb (5.5ppg) provided the spark. The Muhls defense allowed a division best at only 33.96ppg. As the season progressed they got stronger, beating their division opponents for the second time by a greater margin than in their first meeting (except Twin Valley). In the District 3 playoffs, Muhlenberg won the rubber match against their division foe, Twin Valley 34-23.
3. Going a perfect 13-0 in league play places Schuylkill Valley in our third position. Corielle Yarde (26ppg) paced the Panthers to the league’s most potent offense which averaged a whopping 59 points per game. Winning 13 out of 14 games to close out the season made it virtually impossible for Hamburg to gain any ground in the Division III race. The Panthers won by a margin of 28 points on average in 11 of their 13 league wins. Their closest league win was by a margin of 7 points against Central Catholic. Ashton Pachuilo (8.7ppg) and Melanie Modrick (6.1 ppg) made up a Schuylkill Valley triple threat who could hit from outside or in close. Schuylkill Valley’s 467 point differential was a Berks’ best.
2. The Red Knights from Reading High got off to a slow start, winning just twice in their first seven games. But wow did they catch fire, winning 14 of their last 16 contests. They finished the regular season 9-2, their only blemishes coming at the hands of eventual champion Wilson. J’Leisa Pecal (12ppg), Deva’Nyar Workman (11ppg), Kanisha Edwards (10.4ppg), and Leola Pinkney (9ppg) were the driving force of an athletic Reading team which averaged 57ppg (2nd to Schuylkill Valley). Their points scored vs points allowed differential was an impressive 345, good for third in the league (behind Schuylkill Valley, 467, and Wilson, 408). In their 9 wins, the closest margin of victory was 13 points.
1. The Berks County Champion Wilson Bulldogs find themselves at the top of the girls’ ranking after going 11-0 in league play. Their closest league game was a 43-41 win over Reading back in December. No one else in Berks could get closer than 9 points (Daniel Boone). Their stingy defense allowed an average of only 33ppg (2nd to Central Catholic), while their offense averaged 48 ppg (3rd to Schuylkill Valley and Reading). This is a well-rounded team led by Vanessa Rivera (13.1ppg), Amanda Sawlsville (9.6ppg), and Sam Simcox (7.8ppg). Taylor Napoli provided timely outside shooting registering 23 buckets from beyond the arc while Jesse Ebner’s solid “D” and timely scores were essential pieces of the puzzle. Of their 3 non-league losses, 2 were decided by one point at the hands of Lancaster McCaskey and Downingtown East.
