Dear HSSTM Readers,

You know what I love? A great game.
A game that makes you pay attention, sit on the edge of your seat, stand because you just can’t take it, cheer so loud you lose your voice.
I’ve been lucky enough to see a lot of great games. Growing up in a home where we watched a lot of sports and my father was always covering “the game”, I learned pretty quickly to pay attention. Thanksgiving dinner was at halftime and most major family functions occurred around football seasons, basketball games, Olympics, overtimes, playoffs and finals.
My husband doesn’t mind when we go to visit my family and my Dad has ordered every game plan package and channel with your sport of choice. Because it’s my father’s job, it’s work when your kicking back watching a great game.
I’m a fifth generation journalist and a second generation sports writer. I caught the bug after experiencing moments like the American Olympic hockey team beating Russia to win the gold. I was nine-years-old and at my first Olympics.
I parlayed my love for a great game into a career, graduating with a journalism degree. One of my first jobs as a young sports reporter taught me that many great games happen with a field or court full of eager and tenacious teenagers.
Since then I’ve become a wife, mother and more recently, I became a small business owner in West Reading after moving here from Colorado. We came to Berks County because of its strong sense of community, its roots and history, great schools, and because it’s a great place to raise a family.
It’s also a place to catch a great game. I jumped at the opportunity to become editor of this new magazine because these pages honor those students and schools who play for love of their sport, win or lose.
That’s what High School Sports The Magazine is all about. So, if we miss one of those moments, grab a camera and send us a shot. Or better yet, call or e-mail us and share the stories. We know they’re out there, a great game is just a high school away.
